Dewey Beach

The Summer Season each year is the period commencing May 15 and ending September 15.

1. The Town of Dewey Beach has a beach curfew. No persons shall be on the beach between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. during the summer season.

2. No person shall permit a dog or other animal to be on the beach between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. during the summer season.

3. No person shall engage in surf fishing when bathers are within 100 feet, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. during the summer season.

4. No person shall have a beach bonfire at any time of the year without obtaining a permit and paying the fee required by the Town of Dewey Beach Fee Schedule ($30 plus $40 cleanup fee deposit). All fires must be extinguished and the beach cleaned up by 11:00 p.m. Clean-up is complete removal of the residue; residue is not to be buried in the sand or put in any of the trash cans either on the beach or on the streets. The clean-up fee deposit will be refunded after 1:00 p.m. the day following the fire if the cleanup is approved and the fire handled in an orderly fashion. Permits may only be obtained at the town hall 9-5 each day, Saturday and Sunday at police window, and must be paid for in cash. Only one permit will be issued for a given street-end per day; permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

5. No person shall keep, anchor, maintain, or permit any boat owed or operated by him to be kept, anchored, or maintained on any public beach within the Town of Dewey Beach between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. during the summer season without the previous written consent of the Commissioners of Dewey Beach.

6. No person shall launch, land, or permit any boat owned or operated by him to be launched or landed, on or from the beach or strand of the Town of Dewey Beach between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. during the summer season.

7. No person shall be permitted to swim out to or in from a boat off the beach at any time.

8. No vehicles shall be driven on the beach during the summer season, except those operated by police, fire, emergency, town, beach concessionaires under contract, or other authorized municipal or state vehicle on official business. During the off season all vehicles must conform to the licensing and equipment as required by the State and must enter and exit at Chicago Street.

9. All volleyball activities and games shall be restricted to designated volleyball area as established by the Town of Dewey Beach.

10. Between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on weekends and holidays all sport activities involving airborne objects other than volleyball and sports involving adults or teenagers over the age of 13 shall be prohibited. The term " sports activities " shall include any physical activity which, as a result of the activity, could cause physical harm to another individual. Exempt from the provisions of this ordinance are all sports activities involving a mother and/or a father, or guardian, who is playing with a child under the age of 13.

11. No person shall use a surfboard or skimboard, or any other type of water sport device that is constructed with non-flexible material within 100 feet of bathers. Between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on weekends and holidays the use of these devices shall also be prohibited.

12. No person or persons shall be permitted in the beach or within the waters of the Atlantic Ocean contiguous to the beach within the town limits of Dewey Beach during the time period when the Captain of the Dewey Beach Patrol has declared the beach and the waters of the Atlantic Ocean contiguous to the beach unsafe for use.

13. The following are prohibited on the beach:

  • Any alcoholic beverage, during the summer season.
  • Drinking Funnels
  • More than 3 beverage containers unless in bulk metal or hard plastic containers.
  • More than 3 empty beverage or food containers. Person closet to such containers are presumed to be their owner and responsible for such containers.

PARKING PERMIT RULES – STRICTLY ENFORCED
Parking Permits are in effect May 15 thru September 15, as follows:
Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday – 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday – 10:00 a.m. until Midnight
Parking Meters are in effect May 15 thru September 15 10:00 a.m. until Midnight
seven (7) days a week – no exceptions.
Vehicles parked on the right-of-way between the hours 10:00 a.m. and Midnight must display a permit.

Rehoboth Beach


The Rehoboth Beach Police Department welcomes you to our fine resort area. It is our sincere desire that you enjoy a very pleasant vacation. Our local ordinances are listed below. Please follow them.
• We consider it a health and safety measure to close the beach during late hours. Persons shall not be on the beach between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.
• No changing clothes in comfort stations on the boardwalk, under the boardwalk or in vehicles while parked on any public streets.
• No sleeping on the beach between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.
• No sleeping in cars on any street within the City, on or under the boardwalk or on benches.
• Age required by Delaware law to enter bars, etc. is 21 years.
• No drinking or open containers of alcoholic beverages on beach, boardwalk or public streets within the City limits.
• No open fire on the beach.
• Dogs - It is illegal for dogs to run at large at any time. The City has both a leash law and a pooper scooper law which are enforced. Dogs are prohibited from the beach and boardwalk from May 1 through September 30.
• Bikes are allowed on the boardwalk during the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. from May 15th through September 15th. Adult bike riders are not permitted on the sidewalks at any time. Children, under 12, please check with police for regulations.
•Beach wheels are available 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day through Labor Day. They are located at Maryland Avenue and the Boardwalk, and Laurel Street and the Boardwalk. They are located on the beach and cannot be removed from the beach. First come, first serve basis, with no rental fee.

• No vehicles on boardwalk or beach.
• Skateboarding – Skateboards are prohibited on the boardwalk and bandstand year round and on the sidewalks and streets at all hours from May 15 through September 15.
• Roller skates and roller blades - No person shall roller skate or roller blade on the bandstand, boardwalk or Rehoboth Avenue.
• Parking Meters – Parking meters are in effect from the Friday immediately preceding Memorial Day until and including the second Sunday following Labor Day, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. prevailing time until 12:00 a.m. midnight, prevailing time of each day and shall apply to all parking meter zones established within the City. All thirty-minute parking meter zones shall remain posted and shall be in effect for the entire year.

Feeding the Seagulls

Games involving moving objects unless granted permission by a Lifeguard

Skimboards

Swimming to and from a boat (You will be fined)

Bicycles  after 10am (May15-Sept.15)

Pets (May1-Sep 30)

Fishing – restricted to Fisherman’s beach located just north of Boardwalk

Surfing – there is a surfing beach located at the North end of Rehoboth in front of lifeguard stand 1

Fires – except for contained in grills between 6 & 8 pm with permit

The beach is closed to all persons from1 am to 5 am every day

The Rehoboth Beach Patrol is a department of the City of Rehoboth Beach. It operates seasonally from Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend through three weeks following Labor Day.

Lewes Beaches

 Bay and ocean beaches in and near Lewes, Delaware provide swimming, fishing, boating and a host of other water sports. Located off of Cape Henlopen Drive, Beach 1 and Beach 2 provide guarded swimming from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Both beach have rest rooms and the Lyons Club has beach wheelchairs available. Parking at the beach is metered beginning May 1st thru September 30th, with change machines available at both beaches. Also, credit cards are accepted at Beach 1 with a two hour minimum charge.
